A Safari can be likened to a rally stage but a lot rougher. The event is timed and the number of laps you have to complete depends on the number of entries and the length of the lap. The distance can be between 2 and 15 miles. Short 2 mile courses can be covered 12 or 15 times with the longer courses down to 5 or 6 laps. The longer course does tend to have more faster sections.
Vehicles are divided into classes depending on suspension and engine capacity. The Association of Rover Clubs also require the vehicle to be visibly Rover based and Rover powered. There is currently a S. Wales Interclub Championship between us, The West wales 4x4 group and the Mid Wales 4x4 group. This is made up of 7 events in the year with the drivers being able to drop/miss one event.
Safari's need the vehicles to be well built and many of the top drivers use purpose built machines. The damage can mount up during an event and top drivers tend to carry out a complete rebuild over the winter months. It can be very time consuming especially after a major roll or crash !!.
